SACRAMENTO—Legislation to continue the state’s plastic bag recycling program, set to end this year, jumped its first hurdle late yesterday. The Senate Environmental Quality Committee voted 5-1 to approve Senate Bill 1219, a measure by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to extend until January 1, 2020, a state law requiring grocery stores to accept plastic bags for recycling.

SACRAMENTO— Yesterday, on a 26-9 bipartisan vote, the Senate sent the Assembly a measure by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis) to better protect seniors and disabled adults living in California’s long-term care facilities.   Senate Bill 345 would strengthen the independence and accountability California’s State Ombudsman program, intended to defend the rights, safety, and welfare of the state’s long-term care residents.

SACRAMENTO—The State Senate, led by Senator Lois Wolk (D-Davis), honored three Purple Heart recipients from Travis Air Force Base at the State Capitol today.  Tech. Sgt. Ronnie Brickey, Staff Sgt. David Adkins, and Staff Sgt. Brian Buhrer, all 60th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordnance disposal flight members, were honored for wounds they sustained from close-proximity improvised explosive device (IED) blasts during combat missions in Afghanistan.
