Thursday, May 30, 2019

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, issued the following statement today in response to the announce from Gov. Gavin Newsom that he was supporting Sen. Dodd’s bill, Senate Bill 469, which would authorize the suspension of racing at tracks where dangerous conditions exist. The proposal comes amid a spate of horse deaths at Santa Anita Park.

“I appreciate Gov. Newsom for stepping up and being proactive to support my bill,” Sen. Dodd said. “This is much-needed and commonsense legislation to protect horses and riders.”

The bill authorizes the California Horse Racing Board to suspend a license to conduct a horse racing meeting when necessary to protect the health and safety of horses and riders. It cleared the Senate earlier this month on a unanimous vote and will be heard next in the Assembly.
