Sen. Dodd Announces Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Week

Tuesday, September 10, 2019

SACRAMENTO – In recognition of the critical role the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta plays in California’s economy and environment, the Legislature has passed a resolution from Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, designating the week of Sept. 21 as Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Week.

“The Delta is vital to Californians as both a natural resource teeming with abundant wildlife and fish, and a vital economic driver for tourism, recreation and local Delta farmers,” Sen. Dodd said. “We must continue to protect this cherished watershed by preventing pollution and further marshland degradation and promoting its environmental health.”

“The Delta is quite simply the lifeblood of our water system throughout the state of California,” Sen. Dodd said. “It is so important that we protect it.”

Delta Week kicks off Sept. 21 with Delta Waterway Cleanup Day. A list of cleanup sites and information on how to help is here: http://delta.ca.gov/recreation/cleanup/.

Sen. Dodd lauded the stewardship and restoration efforts of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy and Delta Protection Commission.  Both have been instrumental in protecting the 1,100-square-mile expanse, including many crucial waterways like the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers, that support 55 fish and 750 plant species and hosts more than 12 million visitors a year.

“Those who have experienced the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta know what a special place it is and the large impact it has on the daily lives of all Californians,” said Campbell Ingram, executive officer of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy.  “Delta Week showcases the Delta’s important role as the heart of California’s water system, the home to about 500,000 acres of productive agricultural land, and a world-class recreation and tourism destination.”

“More than 500,000 Deltans are directly sustained by the Delta watershed, along with many more residents in the Bay Area and Southern California via water exports. The watershed also helps support the overall Delta economy through ample recreation and tourism opportunities. However, it is also vital to California’s vast farmlands and complex ecosystems, as it provides water throughout large portions of the state,” said Erik Vink, executive director of the Delta Protection Commission. “Delta Watershed Protection Week helps us share the value of our watershed and to promote actions that keep it thriving.”
