Sen. Dodd: Youth Advocate is Sacramento County Woman of the Year

WALNUT GROVE – In her nearly three decades in this Delta community, Sandra Waterhouse has been a champion of disadvantaged youth, working countless hours as a recruiter for the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps, where she has helped provide education and job skills to hundreds of young adults working on climate-related projects, and as a past member of the Juvenile Justice Commission.  For her commitment to those in need, she has been named Sacramento County Woman of the Year by Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa.

“Getting our young people engaged in something that helps them and the planet is quite a feat, and Sandra has proven that she is up to the task,” Sen. Dodd said. “She’s changed lives and in doing so, has made our community better off. We owe her a debt of gratitude and I am proud to recognize for considerable contribution.”

“Our young adults are near and dear to my heart, as I have seen what lack of education and work skills do to young people looking for a way out of poverty or a lifestyle that leads to ruin,” Sandra said. “I work to make sure they have the opportunity to raise themselves up from being low-income and living in disadvantaged surroundings, becoming able to get a living-wage job and support themselves and work in their neighborhoods, plus to carry it forward and bring jobs and opportunities to their peers and their communities.”

Sandra moved to Walnut Grove 27 years ago with her husband William. They have three sons and seven grandchildren. She is a former member of the Delta Citizens Municipal Advisory Council as well as the Sacramento County Juvenile Justice Commission. She is currently serving as lead recruiter and First Aid/CPR/AED instructor for the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps, which serves young adults ages 18 to 26.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Sacramento State University. In 2016, she was named Sacramento County Woman of the Year by U.S. Rep John Garamendi. That same year she received the Champions of Education Award from the city of Sacramento.
