Sen. Dodd Issues Statement on Governor’s A.I. Order

Wednesday, September 6, 2023

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, issued the following statement today on an executive order from Gov. Gavin Newsom on artificial intelligence that mirrors many ideas in Sen. Dodd’s own A.I. resolution, which was adopted by the Legislature earlier this summer.

“Ensuring California is at the forefront of responsible AI deployment and use is critically important, and I applaud Gov. Newsom for taking this step,” Sen. Dodd said. “The governor’s executive action advances the frameworks the Legislature passed in my resolution earlier this year, seeking to educate the public on this transformative technology and establish guiding principles to protect us from abuses. I look forward to working with the governor to ensure California leads the nation -- and the world -- on leveraging the benefits of AI while putting in strong safeguards that protect our rights.”

The Legislature last month unanimously adopted Sen. Dodd’s Senate Concurrent Resolution 17, which expressed the state’s commitment to examining and implementing specified principles related to the use of AI. SCR 17 was the nation’s first artificial intelligence-drafted resolution.
