Sen. Cabaldon applauds choice of Monique Limón as next state Senate leader
SACRAMENTO—Sen. Christopher Cabaldon, D-Yolo Tuesday voiced his strong support for the choice of Senator Monique Limón as the Senate’s next leader. The Senate Democratic Caucus Monday voted unanimously for Limon to succeed current Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire at the end of the year.
Limón, a Latina from Santa Barbara, will be the first woman of color to hold the post.
“Senator Limón is a valued colleague and friend, and I’m thrilled for the people of California that she will hold this leadership position,” said Senator Christopher Cabaldon. “She has an inclusive style that will serve us well as we balance the many issues facing California.
“From the perspective of the Third Senate District, I appreciate her proven leadership for wildfire prevention and recovery, her partnership fighting for UC, CSU, and the community colleges, her collaboration on meeting the challenges facing California’s wine economy, and her steadfast support of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta.”
Senator Cabaldon also praised current Senate President Pro Tem Mike McGuire. Sens. McGuire and Cabaldon both represent Sonoma County and have worked together on such issues as wildfire prevention and response and the future of Sonoma State University.
“Senator McGuire brings the best of Sonoma’s pragmatic ethic to a state government that needs it,” Sen. Cabaldon said. “It is impossible to imagine anyone working harder or smarter. He has led the Senate in tackling tough statewide issues while also being omnipresent in his district, connecting with his constituents and addressing their needs. You can’t look around Sonoma and beyond without seeing investments he secured that have made our region stronger. I will forever appreciate his mentorship and partnership in serving the people of Northern California.”
Sen. Cabaldon said it made sense to choose a new Senate leader now so the succession issue does not hinder the Legislature’s ability to deal with major issues like the LA fire recovery and President Trump’s moves to send National Guard troops and Marines into Los Angeles amid ICE roundups of immigrant workers – a move that has been challenged by the state in court.
“When you are looking into the face of tyranny, clear the deck of your looming task list and focus on the fight at hand,” Sen. Cabaldon said.
