Senator Cabaldon Named Chair of Key Budget Subcommittee

(Sacramento) – Senator Christopher Cabaldon (D-Yolo) has been appointed Chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee responsible for government operations and performance, housing and homelessness, consumer protection, insurance, technology and innovation, economic development, household savings, veterans and the military department, and a broad range of other key state agencies.

“California must become best-in-class at delivering results, so I look forward to making the right investments and doing the needed oversight as chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on State Administration and General Government to make sure state and local governments get the job done,” said Senator Cabaldon (D-Yolo).

In addition, Senator Cabaldon was appointed to four other Senate committees to draw on his expertise:

  • Education. He was previously vice chancellor of California’s community colleges, state university professor, president of the Linked Learning Alliance (the state’s lead college-and-career pathway partner), education chair for America’s mayors, and President Obama’s appointee to help lead America’s College Promise. He also represented California at the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education.

  • Local Government. Cabaldon served two decades as Mayor of West Sacramento, and as chair of the regional council of governments, a member of the Speaker’s Commission on Regionalism, and state board member for the League of California Cities. He was also U.S. Delegate to the Global Parliament of Mayors.

  • Housing. Cabaldon led his city as mayor to be one of California’s consistent top producers of housing and one of the first to earn the state’s ProHousing designation, and cut unsheltered homelessness in half.

  • Appropriations. West Sacramento was widely recognized for strong fiscal management, even through three economic recessions. Cabaldon also worked as chief of staff to the chair of the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Senator Cabaldon stated, “In a district where tens of thousands can’t find homes they can afford or keep the home insurance they need and their mortgages require, I welcome the opportunity to lead the budget subcommittee charged with assuring that pragmatic solutions are on the way. It is the arena where I can stand up for the service members and veterans of Travis Air Force Base, for the Veterans Home in Yountville, for the cities and counties working hard to strengthen and diversify their local economies, and for the thousands of District 3 residents who devote their lives to public service in state government. And I’m excited to have the opportunity to continue my life’s work to advance high quality educational opportunity—and success—for all.”
