Sen. Dodd Issues Statement on Solano County Coronavirus Case

Thursday, February 27, 2020

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, made the following statement today about a Solano County resident becoming the first person in the United States to contract novel coronavirus from an unknown source.

“I have been in contact with state and local public health officials who are taking every precaution to prevent the spread of this virus,” Sen. Dodd said. “We must take this situation seriously and monitor it closely. However, there is no cause for alarm or panic. People are not advised to change their daily routines.”

The Center for Disease Control yesterday confirmed the first person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 involved someone in Solano County. The person had no known contact with the virus through travel or with a known infected person. The patient was taken to a Sacramento County medical facility.

Sen. Dodd represents all of Solano County’s 445,000 residents in addition to those in five nearby counties.

California Department of Public Health officials said the health risk of novel coronavirus to the general public remains low. The virus has a high transmission rate but a low mortality rate. There have been no confirmed deaths in the United States to date.

As with any virus, it is important to take steps to protect your health and those around you by washing hands with soap and water, avoiding touching eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands, avoiding close contact with those who are sick and staying away from work, school or other people if you develop respiratory symptoms like fever and coughing.
