Sen. Dodd Responds to School Reopening Proposal

Thursday, February 18, 2021

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, issued the following statement today as Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Legislature negotiate plans to spur reopening of California’s public schools.

"Schools must safely reopen, as soon as possible,” Sen. Dodd said. “Many districts around the state have already done so, and with the increasing number of people being vaccinated, it is clearly the right thing to do. Prioritizing teachers is important, but it should not hold up our progress. Allowing our children to continue their education is essential for their well-being, to achieve equity and for the overall economy. I appreciate the governor's efforts to push forward reopening, and we need all stakeholders to step up to make it happen without undue delay.”

Today, legislation was introduced from Assembly and Senate budget committees to provide more than $6 billion for campus reopening and to aid in learning recovery. Senate/Assembly Bill 86 provides a framework for discussions to safely reopen schools this spring.
