Sen. Dodd Comment on Governor’s May Budget Revision

Friday, May 10, 2024

SACRAMENTO – Sen. Bill Dodd, D-Napa, issued the following statement today on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s proposal to balance California’s 2024-25 budget:

“Gov. Newsom’s revised budget proposal underscores how important our early budget actions were to reduce the deficit, but also that there’s still a lot of work ahead,” Sen. Dodd said. “We need to trim spending and live within our means while still making progress on critical areas like education, homelessness and wildfire prevention. Over the next month, I’ll be working with my legislative colleagues to review and build upon the foundation set by the governor.”

Gov. Newsom proposes a $288.1 billion budget that funds essential services such as education and public safety while continuing to pursue goals on housing development, reducing homelessness and climate change. At the same time, the governor’s budget addresses anticipated shortfalls over the next two budget years.

Highlights:

  • Reduces an anticipated a $27.6 billion shortfall through use of reserves, efficiencies, reductions, shifts and borrowing
  • Builds upon early action reductions already approved by the Legislature that reduced the deficit by $17.3 billion
