This month marks the start of Spring, which embodies new growth and presents us with an excellent opportunity to reflect on our growth as a community. Over the last year, we’ve been able to make meaningful progress in California in a number of areas, including creating some of the toughest equal pay laws in the country and supporting education, but there is still much work to be done. As I look ahead, I see closing the word gap as one of our greatest challenges and greatest opportunities.

As we embark on a new year, it’s a great time to reflect on our accomplishments over the last 12 months and also set goals for the upcoming year. Winter is coming, and some experts are saying this year's El Niño could be one of the most powerful on record. This year marks the 95th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, a significant milestone in the evolution of civil rights in our nation’s history. While we have made progress over the past 95 years, women still do not receive equal pay for equal work. California can play an important role in correcting this disparity.

It’s graduation season, and many young people are celebrating their accomplishments and preparing for the next chapter in their lives. As I reflect on the promise of this generation and all they will accomplish, I also find myself concerned with the state they are inheriting. Pay equity is one of the fundamental issues we must address to provide our children a brighter future and a better state to call home.
